  • Most pianos need tuning once or twice a year to stay stable and in good musical condition. Instruments in rooms with fluctuating temperature or humidity may benefit from more frequent tuning.

  • My tuning prices are published on the piano tuning page for the three levels of service I offer.

  • Yes. Even long‑neglected pianos can almost always be brought back to pitch. Some pianos may need a pitch raise (a two‑stage tuning process) before the fine-tuning, but this is completely normal.

  • If a piano is very flat or hasn’t been tuned for a long time, the string tension is too low for a normal tuning to hold. A pitch correction quickly brings the piano close to concert pitch, allowing the fine-tuning to be accurate and stable.

  • In most cases, yes. Sticky keys, noisy keys, and pedal issues can often be repaired during the same visit. If the problem is more complex, I’ll explain the options clearly.

  • A standard tuning usually takes about 60- 90 minutes, depending on the piano’s condition. If you have scheduled a corrective service and more work is needed — such as a pitch raise or minor repairs — the appointment may take a little longer.

  • The best things you can do are:

    • Keep the piano away from radiators and direct sunlight

    • Maintain stable room temperature and humidity

    • Avoid placing it against an external wall

    • Have it tuned regularly

    These simple steps make a big difference to tuning stability.

  • Yes. I tune upright and grand pianos of all ages and makes, including Yamaha, Kawai, Kemble, Steinway, and older British pianos.

  • Yes. I provide tuning for schools, churches, concert venues, and recording studios across Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, and South Wales.

  • 99% of digital pianos don’t require tuning, but I can advise on maintenance, cleaning, and when it might be time to consider an upgrade. However, I do not fix digital pianos.

Tuning the Steinway Concert Grand at the Reardon Smith Theatre in the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff. 👍🏻😎🎹
A beautiful Richard Lipp and Sohn baby grand was the patient last week…made in Stuttgart…Lipp and Sohn was one of Germany’s most prestigious “old world” piano manufacturers and the firm enjoyed a great deal of success throughout the 19th and 20th Centuries. The firm was known for building high-quality, durable instruments of superior touch and tone. Instruments by Richard Lipp & Sohn were primarily marketed in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Founded in 1831 they were predecessors to “the big three” and built instruments that would surely rival the likes of Bechstein and Bluthner. This one was no exception.
Fulfilled a definite bucket list ambition on a recent European trip. The Mozart museum in Mozart’s childhood house and his residence just around the corner from it in Salzburg…Awesome!
Yesterday morning was spent tuning and fettling the Petrof grand piano at Abergavenny Borough Theatre, in preparation for the Noriko Ogawa piano recital last night. The program entitled “The Romantic piano” included works by Ravel, Debussy and Beethoven. Hope it went well. 💪😎🎹

Lovely afternoon down in Cardiff this afternoon. A Boston grand, made by Steinway, admittedly the budget model, but oh man you would never have known it. What a lovely piano. 6’5” of absolute loveliness with the most charismatic of owners who is an absolute gem of a man. I had a ball! I didn’t want to leave after doing my usual little “recital”! Man I loved this piano! OMG! I think I’ve got the best job in the world!😂😎👍💪👊
One of the Doctors at Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan in Ebbw Vale rang us to tune a piano on the Ebbw ward last week. It was a nice gesture as a gift to the patients up there on the ward. I turned up and quite frankly the instrument belonged in a skip! 😂 So we switched it for another better piano…thought it was the least we could do. Back to tune it next week and hopefully the Ebbw ward will be a little more musical than it was before! Tuned a truly wonderful Bluthner boudoir yesterday in Llandovery. A Bluthner patent action with a gorgeous light touch and an Aliquot system (a fourth string on each trichord that is not struck but resonates in sympathy with the note played). A re-polyestered case and a fully restored action, plate and strings made for a truly amazing and beautiful instrument. We tune any piano with the same love and care that went into this one.
