🎹❓FAQs

  • Most pianos need tuning once or twice a year to stay stable and in good musical condition. Instruments in rooms with fluctuating temperature or humidity may benefit from more frequent tuning.

  • My tuning prices are published on the piano tuning page for the three levels of service I offer.

  • Yes. Even long‑neglected pianos can almost always be brought back to pitch. Some pianos may need a pitch correction (a two‑stage tuning process) before the fine-tuning, but this is completely normal.

  • If a piano is very flat or hasn’t been tuned for a long time, the string tension is too low for a normal tuning to hold. A pitch correction quickly brings the piano close to concert pitch, allowing the fine-tuning to be accurate and stable.

  • In most cases, yes. Sticky keys, noisy keys, and pedal issues can often be repaired during the same visit. If the problem is more complex, I’ll explain the options clearly.

  • A standard tuning usually takes about 90 minutes, depending on the piano’s condition. If you have scheduled a corrective service and more work is needed — such as a pitch correction or minor repairs — the appointment may take a little longer.

  • The best things you can do are:

    • Keep the piano away from radiators and direct sunlight

    • Maintain stable room temperature and humidity

    • Avoid placing it against an external wall

    • Have it tuned regularly

These simple steps make a big difference to tuning stability.

  • 99% of digital pianos don’t require tuning, but I can advise on maintenance, cleaning, and when it might be time to consider an upgrade. However, I do not fix digital pianos.

  • Piano regulation is the process of adjusting all the moving parts of the action so the piano plays smoothly, evenly, and predictably. Over time, felt compresses, wood settles, and components drift out of alignment, which affects how each key responds.

Regulation restores the correct touch, control, and consistency across the whole keyboard. This includes setting key height, key dip, hammer travel, let‑off, drop, repetition, and damper timing so every note feels the same and responds exactly as it should.

A well‑regulated piano is easier to play, more expressive, and far more enjoyable for any pianist.

  • There is every chance that your piano can be brought back to its best in one day. During a same-day renovation, a combination of piano repairs, piano tuning, pitch correction (if possible), action regulation, keyboard servicing and case detailing can literally transform a well-loved piano.

  • Piano voicing is the process of adjusting the hammers so the piano produces a balanced, pleasing, and expressive tone. Over time, the hammer felts become compacted, grooved, or uneven, which can make a piano sound too bright, too dull, harsh, weak, or uneven from note to note.

Voicing restores the hammer felt to the right condition and shape so the piano speaks beautifully across the whole keyboard.

  • Yes. I offer castor replacement and fitting, and I also fit safety castors to pianos in public places.

  • I stock only high-quality used and second-hand instruments that are reset back to factory settings before sale. I only stock upright pianos due to space limitations. The upright pre-loved pianos in stock are all serviced, regulated and tuned to concert pitch by the time they are ready for sale.  We deliver all pianos free of charge within 50 miles of our showroom. The delivery charge is £1 a mile after that. I don’t sell pianos online. Any piano sold must be viewed beforehand in person.

  • It's difficult to give an exact answer without all the information, but there are pricing guidelines on the removal page.

  • We offer a UK nationwide service.

  • It’s difficult to give an exact answer, but the majority of disposals within 50 miles of Abergavenny are in the region of £150. Send a message with details of access, and I’ll provide a clear, fair quote.

  • The vast majority of our disposals are from South East Wales. We will travel further afield, but obviously the charges increase to a point where it is not economically viable for our customers to proceed, as someone more local will offer a better deal. We regularly travel to Abergavenny, Brecon, Cardiff, Cwmbran, Hay-on-Wye, Hereford, Monmouth, Newport, Pontypool, Ross-on-Wye, Swansea and the Welsh Valleys.
